'Broadway really is the jewel in the Cotswolds'
Broadway village sits at the bottom of Beacon Hill and Fish Hill. On Beacon Hill, guarding over the village, is 'the highest little castle in the Cotswolds': Broadway Tower. The tower is 1089 feet above sea level and offers fantastic views to the village and beyond - it is claimed that a quarter of the total number of counties in England and Wales can be seen on a clear day.
Broadway village is world-famous, with its long and wide high street, two churches and attractive honey-coloured stone houses and cottages which date mainly from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The oldest church, St Eadburgha's dates from about 1200 and the newer chuch, St Michael and All Angels, dates from 1840.
The Lygon Arms, which is prominent in the middle of the high street, takes its name from General Edward Lygon who was one of Wellington's commanders at Waterloo. Sydney Russell restored the Lygon to its former glory in the early 20th century and his son Sir Gordon Russell - the noted furniture-maker and designer set up his workshop nearby.
